Understanding the formation process of the catalyst layer (formed from aggregates of platinum-supported carbon and ionomers with sulfonic acid groups) and information on the optimal catalyst layer structure and fabrication process will improve power generation efficiency.
To tackle these issues, we developed a spray-type sample application apparatus for simultaneous in-situ SANS and WANS measurements to study how the catalyst layer is formed after spray application of catalyst ink, which can simulate the actual catalyst layer production process. This apparatus has been used at the neutron experimental apparatus installed in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) for research on automotive fuel
